1Samuel 16 - Listen
1
And the LORD
said
unto Samuel,
How long wilt thou mourn
for Saul,
seeing I have rejected
him from reigning
over Israel?
fill
thine horn
with oil,
and go,
I will send
thee to Jesse
the Bethlehemite:
for I have provided
me a king
among his sons.
2
And Samuel
said,
How can I go?
if Saul
hear
it, he will kill
me. And the LORD
said,
Take
an heifer
*
with thee,
and say,
I am come
to sacrifice
to the LORD.
3
And call
Jesse
to the sacrifice,
and I will shew
thee what thou shalt do:
and thou shalt anoint
unto me him whom I name
4
And Samuel
did
that which the LORD
spake,
and came
to Bethlehem.
And the elders
of the town
trembled
at his coming,
and said,
Comest
thou peaceably?
5
And he said,
Peaceably:
I am come
to sacrifice
unto the LORD:
sanctify
yourselves, and come
with me to the sacrifice.
And he sanctified
Jesse
and his sons,
and called
them to the sacrifice.
6
And it came to pass, when they were come,
that he looked
on Eliab,
and said,
Surely the LORD'S
anointed
7
But the LORD
said
unto Samuel,
Look
not on his countenance,
or on the height
of his stature;
because I have refused
him: for the LORD seeth not as man
seeth;
for man
looketh
on the outward appearance,
but the LORD
looketh
on the heart.
8
Then Jesse
called
Abinadab,
and made him pass
before
Samuel.
And he said,
Neither hath the LORD
chosen
9
Then Jesse
made Shammah
to pass by.
And he said,
Neither hath the LORD
chosen
10
Again, Jesse
made seven
of his sons
to pass
before
Samuel.
And Samuel
said
unto Jesse,
The LORD
hath not chosen
11
And Samuel
said
unto Jesse,
Are here all
thy children?
And he said,
There remaineth
yet the youngest,
and, behold, he keepeth
the sheep.
And Samuel
said
unto Jesse,
Send
and fetch
him: for we will not sit down
till he come
hither.
12
And he sent,
and brought him in.
Now he was ruddy,
and withal
of a beautiful
countenance,
and goodly
to look to.
And the LORD
said,
Arise,
anoint
13
Then Samuel
took
the horn
of oil,
and anointed
him in the midst
of his brethren:
and the Spirit
of the LORD
came
upon David
from that day
forward.
So Samuel
rose up,
and went
to Ramah.
14
But the Spirit
of the LORD
departed
from Saul,
and an evil
spirit
from the LORD
troubled
15
And Saul's
servants
said
unto him, Behold now, an evil
spirit
from God
troubleth
16
Let our lord
now command
thy servants,
which are before
thee, to seek out
a man,
who is a cunning
player
on an harp:
and it shall come to pass, when the evil
spirit
from God
is upon thee, that he shall play
with his hand,
and thou shalt be well.
17
And Saul
said
unto his servants,
Provide
me now a man
that can play
well,
and bring
18
Then answered
one
of the servants,
and said,
Behold, I have seen
a son
of Jesse
the Bethlehemite,
that is cunning
in playing,
and a mighty
valiant man,
and a man
of war,
and prudent
in matters,
and a comely
person,
and the LORD
19
Wherefore Saul
sent
messengers
unto Jesse,
and said,
Send
me David
thy son,
which is with the sheep.
20
And Jesse
took
an ass
laden with bread,
and a bottle
of wine,
and a
kid,
*
and sent
them by
David
his son
unto Saul.
21
And David
came
to Saul,
and stood
before
him: and he loved
him greatly;
and he became his armourbearer.
*
22
And Saul
sent
to Jesse,
saying,
Let David,
I pray thee, stand
before
me; for he hath found
favour
in my sight.
23
And it came to pass, when the evil spirit
from God
was upon Saul,
that David
took
an harp,
and played
with his hand:
so Saul
was refreshed,
and was well,
and the evil
spirit
departed

Zechariah 8 - Listen
1
Again the word
of the LORD
of hosts
came to me, saying,
2
Thus saith
the LORD
of hosts;
I was jealous
for Zion
with great
jealousy,
and I was jealous
for her with great
fury.
3
Thus saith
the LORD;
I am returned
unto Zion,
and will dwell
in the midst
of Jerusalem:
and Jerusalem
shall be called
a city
of truth;
and the mountain
of the LORD
of hosts
the holy
mountain.
4
Thus saith
the LORD
of hosts;
There shall yet old men
and old women
dwell
in the streets
of Jerusalem,
and every man
with his staff
in his hand
for very
age.
5
And the streets
of the city
shall be full
of boys
and girls
playing
in the streets
6
Thus saith
the LORD
of hosts;
If it be marvellous
in the eyes
of the remnant
of this people
in these days,
should it also be marvellous
in mine eyes?
saith
the LORD
of hosts.
7
Thus saith
the LORD
of hosts;
Behold, I will save
my people
from the east
country,
and from the west
*
country;
8
And I will bring
them, and they shall dwell
in the midst
of Jerusalem:
and they shall be my people,
and I will be their God,
in truth
and in righteousness.
9
Thus saith
the LORD
of hosts;
Let your hands
be strong,
ye that hear
in these days
these words
by the mouth
of the prophets,
which were in the day
that the foundation
*
of the house
of the LORD
of hosts
was laid,
that the temple
might be built.
10
For before
these days
there was
no hire
for man,
nor any hire
for beast;
neither was there any peace
to him that went out
or came in
because of the affliction:
for I set
all men
every one
against his neighbour.
11
But now I will not be unto the residue
of this people
as in the former
days,
saith
the LORD
of hosts.
12
For the seed
shall be prosperous;
the vine
shall give
her fruit,
and the ground
shall give
her increase,
and the heavens
shall give
their dew;
and I will cause the remnant
of this people
to possess
13
And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a curse
among the heathen,
O house
of Judah,
and house
of Israel;
so will I save
you, and ye shall be a blessing:
fear
not, but let your hands
be strong.
14
For thus saith
the LORD
of hosts;
As I thought
to punish
you, when your fathers
provoked me to wrath,
saith
the LORD
of hosts,
and I repented
15
So again
have I thought
in these days
to do well
unto Jerusalem
and to the house
of Judah:
fear
16
These are the things
that ye shall do;
Speak
ye every man
the truth
to his neighbour;
execute
the judgment
of truth
and peace
in your gates:
17
And let none
of you imagine
evil
in your hearts
against his neighbour;
and love
no false
oath:
for all these are things that I hate,
saith
the LORD.
18
And the word
of the LORD
of hosts
came unto me, saying,
19
Thus saith
the LORD
of hosts;
The fast
of the fourth
month, and the fast
of the fifth,
and the fast
of the seventh,
and the fast
of the tenth,
shall be to the house
of Judah
joy
and gladness,
and cheerful
feasts;
therefore love
the truth
and peace.
20
Thus saith
the LORD
of hosts;
It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come
people,
and the inhabitants
of many
cities:
21
And the inhabitants
of one
city shall go
to another,
saying,
Let us go
speedily
to pray
before
the LORD,
and to seek
the LORD
of hosts:
I will go
22
Yea, many
people
and strong
nations
shall come
to seek
the LORD
of hosts
in Jerusalem,
and to pray
before
the LORD.
23
Thus saith
the LORD
of hosts;
In those days
it shall come to pass, that ten
men
shall take hold
out of all languages
of the nations,
even shall take hold
of the skirt
of him that is a Jew,
*
saying,
We will go
with you: for we have heard
that God |
