To understand what 1Samuel is all about you need to compare it with other books, chapters and perhaps even verses related to the 9th Spoke, since 1Samuel is the 9th book of the 1st cycle of the Biblewheel, also the 9th book of the Protestant, especially the 1611 King James sincere translation and canon of Scriptures, where no copyright laws exist over it. You can quote it as much as you want. 

Upon comparing 1Samuel the 9th book with Judges the 9th chapter you will realize that the narrative is a summarized form of 1Samuel which occurred in a different time.

Both Abimelech and Saul who became king were given an evil spirit set up against their own people and they died in battle in the closing verses of Judges 9 and closing chapter of 1Samuel. Both called their armourbearer to kill them in order to avoid embarrassment by their enemies. While Abimelech was embarrassed to be slain by a woman, as the book of Judges shows the weak defeating the strong, Saul was embarrassed to be slain by the uncircumcised enemy, the Philistines.

And throughout the texts there are twists and turns of themes. One example the God sending the evil spirit as there arose a competition to the throne. And the people chose the new regime than the old established regime. The Shechemites chose Gaal the son of Ebed over Abimelech and Israel chose the young David in place of Saul.

Just as Jotham fled from Abimelech while Abimelech killed Jotham's 70 brethren David fled from Saul while Saul tried to kill him in his possessive behavior while he had the evil spirit. Saul killed the priests which aided David as he escaped from Saul's hand in 1Samuel 21. 1Samuel 16, 18 and 19 stretch the theme of Saul having received an evil spirit from the LORD, while the narrative in Judges 9 summarizes as God sending an evil spirit between Abimelech and the Shechemites.

Both Gaal the son of Ebed and Nabal the Carmelite (1Samuel 25) say, Who is (or who does he think he is)? Gaal says, Who is Abimelech that we should serve him? Nabal the Carmelite says, Who is David the son of Jesse that I should give food to him? And when Nabal's heart became a stone that he died, the scripture says that God returned his evil upon his own head. The same is said concerning Abimelech in Judges 9. Just as Gaal despised Abimelech as Zebul, Abimelech's officer points out sons of Belial despised as Saul was anointed king by not giving him gifts in Judges 10. But Saul didn't seek to avenge them as opposed to Abimelech.

There might also be more hidden truths pointing to the gospel, or good news of Jesus Christ. One of the mountains in Judges 9 from where Abimelech descended is called Zalmon meaning shadow. Was Abimelech a shadow of Jesus Christ? As Abimelech cut down a bough from a tree, he told his followers to do as what he did, perhaps pointing to Jesus telling his disciples to pick up their crosses and follow him, which is a daily task. While Judges mentions Hamor and his son Shechem (or the Shechemites who were Israelites who inhabited the town or region which at first belonged to Shechem). While Hamor means ass or donkey, while Shechem means back or shoulder. And perhaps Judges 9 relates as shadow of the gospel of Jesus Christ through Zechariah 9 where Jesus is prophesied to enter Jerusalem being lowly riding on a donkey as their king to be sacrificed in order to conquer death by dying on the cross first and afterwards being risen.

Judges 9
Judges 9 48 And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that [were] with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid [it] on his shoulder, and said unto the people that [were] with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, [and] do as I [have done].

Zalmon means shadow perhaps relating the context as a shadow of Jesus Christ and the gospel. And Shechem means shoulder.

Jesus said:

Luke 9
Luke 9 23 And he said to [them] all, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Further:

Judges 9
Judges 9 28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who [is] Abimelech, and who [is] Shechem, that we should serve him? [is] not [he] the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?

Gaal means to loathe and Ebed means servant whereas Hamor means ass or donkey. The back of the donkey is cross-shaped.

Jotham's parable of the trees electing a king being a bramble and set the city of Shechem on fire. Abimelech the king cuts down bows and tells his followers to do the same in order to use them for the fire against the city. There also seems to be a word play between bone as Abimelech is of the same bone (h6106 עַצְמֵכֶם עֶצֶםʿeṣem) as the Shechemites and trees (h6086 הָעֵצִים עֵץ ʿēṣ) thus associating the trees to the Shechemites:

Judges 9

Judges 9 2 Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether [is] better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, [which are] threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I [am] your bone and your flesh. 8 The trees went forth [on a time] to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us. 9 But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees? 10 And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, [and] reign over us. 11 But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees? 12 Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, [and] reign over us. 13 And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees? 14 Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, [and] reign over us. 15 And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, [then] come [and] put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon. 48 And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that [were] with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid [it] on his shoulder, and said unto the people that [were] with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, [and] do as I [have done].

Also Abimelech was the son of Gideon the son of Joash, meaning God's fire. And when God set Abimelech against the Shechemites because they rejected him as king after three years he set their city on fire:

Judges 8
Judges 8 31 And his concubine that [was] in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech. 32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Judges 9 and the 9th book 1Samuel may also point out to some extent to the destruction of the temple in 70 AD. The Jews claimed that they have no king but Caesar and trust in his bramble shadow and betray Jesus the real king of creation to the cross only to rebel against him and be crushed in 70 AD. The Romans were westerners as the Philistines were who fought Saul to his death. Jesus told his disciples to flee to the mountains in Matthew 24 just as Jotham and David fled and Abimelech and Saul were crushed by their opponents.

I will illustrate the pages of the innerwheel of 1Samuel as (1Samuel Xy) where X is the spoke number and y is the cycle. For example:
